Barcelona, Spain, Jun 13 (EFE).- Former world no.1 Rafael Nadal and current world no. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, who recently won the French Open, have been called up by Spanish coach David Ferrer to compete at the Paris Olympics.

Pablo Carreno, won an Olympic bronze medal in men’s singles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Alejandro Davidovich and the world’s no.1 ranked doubles player, Marcel Granollers, will also be part of the men’s team.

The first four will compete in the individual draw, and Granollers will only compete in the doubles category, in which Nadal and Alcaraz will also form one of the two pairs that will represent Spain in the tournament.

“We have a great team and we are going to play at Roland Garros, that court that Nadal and Alcaraz know so much, and we hope to give a joy to Spanish sport,” said Ferrer.

The Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) announced the team at an event held at the RCT Barcelona-1899.

The final list for Paris 2024 will be announced on July 4, coinciding with the Wimbledon tournament.

If there are no last-minute unforeseen events, Nadal, at 38 years old, will compete in his fourth Olympic Games.

The Spaniard also took part in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, where he won the gold medal in singles, and Rio de Janeiro 2016, where he won gold in doubles, partnering with Marc Lopez.

In Paris, he will return to the stage where he made history by winning the Roland Garros title 14 times.

For the women’s draw, coach Anabel Medina has called up Sara Sorribes and Cristina Bucsa.

The Paris Olympics will be held between July 25 and Aug.11. EFE
