On Easter Monday, April 1, stores will be closed everywhere but Elche

In the Valencian Community, Easter weekend isn’t considered a non-working holiday, so most of the larger stores will conduct business as usual. In fact, it’s one of the only regions in Spain where Good Friday, March 29, isn’t a bank holiday.

This is good news for anyone who needs to pick up a few bits over the weekend, or for tourists arriving in Alicante over the weekend. But remember, many supermarkets like Mercadona still choose to close on Sundays regardless, so as always, it’s best to check on the website of your local store before you head out.

Here are the authorised opening dates and times for the big stores in Alicante province:

  • March 29 and 31: Good Friday and Easter Sunday, respectively. Most stores will be open, but shops in Elche will be closed on the 31st.
  • March 29 and 31, as well as Sunday, April 7: Stores in areas with high seasonal and annual tourist traffic, as well as in Valencia and Alicante, will be open for business.
  • Easter Monday, April 1: Most stores will be closed, but Elche’s El Corte Inglés store will be open from 11am until 9pm.

According to Joaquín Cerveró, spokesperson for the National Association of Large Distribution Companies (Anged), the recent opening on March 24 was a huge success, and they’re expecting even higher numbers for Good Friday and Easter Sunday. In fact, estimates suggest that more than two million people will pass through the large stores in the Valencian Community during these ten days, surpassing last year’s figures.

El Corte Inglés

With the exception of Elche, all El Corte Inglés shopping centres will open on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, from 11am until 9pm. The Alicante city commercial centre will also be allowed to open on Sunday April 7, as it’s considered a High Tourist Zone (ZGAT).

On April 1, El Corte Inglés in Elche will remain open but it will be closed everywhere else in the Valencian Community.
