The Spanish PM has travelled to Woodstock for a meeting of the European Political Community

The President and Prime Minister of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has travelled to Woodstock in the United Kingdom to take part in the European Political Community meeting, where he met with around 50 European leaders.

According to Spanish government sources, both leaders expressed their conviction that, since the agreement on Gibraltar’s status post-Brexit was very advanced under Rishi Sunak, it will be possible to conclude the negotiations in the near future.

However, they did not go into details, nor did they specify any specific date as a deadline.

The one shred we have to hang onto, though, is that upon his arrival at the summit, Sánchez made statements to journalists expressing his confidence that a deal would be possible in the coming months.

Spain’s commitment to Ukraine

Sánchez also met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who thanked him for the ‘strong’ support that Spain is giving his country. Zelenskyy particularly highlighted the support shown at the NATO summit held in Washington last week.

Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to Ukraine, assuring that aid would be maintained as long as necessary. The NATO summit underlined the importance of the Alliance considering Ukraine’s path to NATO membership as irreversible. In addition, Sánchez supported a fund of 40 billion euros for Ukraine’s military needs, including the 1 billion euros committed by Spain for 2024.

The President also showed his support for a second peace conference in Ukraine, planned by Zelenskyy after the first one held in Switzerland last June.
