Madrid, Apr 26 (EFE).- Pedro Rocha was appointed the new president of Spain’s football federation (RFEF) on Friday.
His appointment comes a day after the Spanish government formed a committee to oversee the RFEF in the wake of scandals involving former president Luis Rubiales.
Rubiales and other senior RFEF figures were arrested this month as part of a corruption investigation.
The former RFEF president is also facing a sexual assault trial after he kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain’s World Cup win last summer.
Hermoso said the kiss was not consensual, but Rubiales strongly denied any wrongdoing before eventually resigning in September amid mounting pressure.
The Superior Sports Council (CSD) set up the committee “in response to the crisis of the entity and in defense of the general interest of Spain”.
FIFA and UEFA said on Thursday that they would evaluate whether the creation of a committee to supervise the RFEF could affect its independence, without “undue” government interference.
Rocha, who was the only candidate for the role, has been the interim president since September after Rubiales was handed a three-month temporary suspension by FIFA for his behavior during the Women’s World Cup final. EFE
