Sergio Llull will continue to extend his legend with Real Madrid. The Chamartín club officially announced this Thursday the renewal of the Balearic point guard’s contract for another year, bringing his total to nineteen seasons wearing the white jersey. The retirements of Rudy Fernández and Sergio Rodríguez, along with the departure of Frenchman Fabien Causeur, make the Spanish international the last survivor of that old guard that has brought so much success to Real Madrid’s basketball section in recent years.

As the all-time leading three-point shooter in the EuroLeague and the player with the most games played in Real Madrid’s history (1,083 games), Llull has become one of the greatest legends of the Chamartín club and Spanish basketball during his 18 seasons defending the interests of the eleven-time European champion.

His trophy cabinet as a Madridista boasts 28 titles: three EuroLeagues, one Intercontinental Cup, eight Leagues, seven King’s Cups, and nine Spanish Super Cups. To all these successes, we must add the laurels he has achieved with the Spanish national team: four medals in the EuroBasket (three gold and one bronze), a gold in the 2019 World Cup, and two Olympic medals (silver in London 2012 and bronze in Rio 2016).

Record Breaker

Sergio Llull, who is currently training with the Spanish national team for the Paris Olympics, joined Real Madrid in 2017 when he was just 19 years old and already one of Spain’s great basketball promises.

Coming from Bàsquet Manresa, the Mahon native debuted under Joan Plaza’s orders amidst tough competition for his position, as that roster included two point guards of the caliber of Spaniard Raúl López and Turk Kerem Tunçeri. However, his impact was immediate, and just a month after his arrival, he won his first title with Real Madrid by defeating Barça in the ACB League final.

This was only the beginning of an enduring love affair between Llull and Real Madrid fans that remains unbroken to this day. Known for thrilling Merengue fans with his famous ‘mandarinas’ (buzzer-beaters), Llull has been one of Real Madrid’s great leaders for nearly two decades and has become a record collector.

He is the all-time leading three-point shooter in EuroLeague history, having surpassed Juan Carlos Navarro last season. He is also the player with the most games played for Real Madrid (1,083). And thanks to his newly signed renewal, he will become the player with the most seasons in Real Madrid’s basketball section with nineteen, surpassing Rafa Rullán’s tenure (1969-87).
