Christantus Uche is one of the standout names at Getafe this summer. Bordalás’ team strengthened with this unknown midfielder in the transfer market after he dazzled at Ceuta in Primera RFEF. The Nigerian thus completed a meteoric rise to the elite of Spanish football; in two years, he went from playing in the fifth division in Extremadura to debuting with a goal at San Mamés.
In recent hours, the player gave an interview to ‘ESPN Africa’ where he was asked about his experience in La Liga. Uche was so candid in his criticisms that he may now face a sanction.
In less than a minute, he puts referees down and accuses “some fans” in Spain of racist insults. “In the first two or three LaLiga matches, I saw with my own eyes that the referees are very bad. They hit me, and the referee just told me to get up, but if they hit someone else, the referee just calls it. It’s very painful, very painful,” he complains.
Then, without any questions in between, the footballer goes on to denounce racist insults on Spanish fields: “Some fans shout ‘fucking black’, ‘you’re a black’, this, that… and no, that’s not good. It’s not good.”
Both in the audiovisual document published by ESPN and in the news written on the official page of the sports media, it is not clarified whether Uche is denouncing unequal treatment by referees because of his skin color or simply because he does not play for a ‘big’ club. Nor does the footballer go into details about when he experienced racist episodes in Spain, whether it was already as a Getafe player or during his previous experiences at Ceuta and Moralo in Extremadura.
His president Ángel Torres has been very blunt. Far from supporting his player’s complaint, he has told him to keep quiet for fear of sanctions from the Referees’ Committee. “From now on, what he’ll have to do is not talk,” he said about the accusation against the referees’ group. When asked about the racist insults, Torres was surprised by the complaint: “But if he doesn’t understand, how can he say that!” And he lashed out at journalists: “You must be more respectful.” “When (Uche) has been here for one or two years – which he already has – he can say whatever he wants but now… Let’s hope the committees understand and it’s just a warning,” concluded Getafe’s president.
