The driver has tested positive for drugs and alcohol
Authorities have confirmed that the driver responsible for the crash tested positive for drugs and alcohol and is now in custody at La Arrixaca hospital under police supervision.
One of the people injured in the crash is Miguel Ángel Ortega, a regional socialist deputy politician who was on his way to a parliamentary session at the time of the accident.
Ortega required surgery due to blood loss but is in a stable condition, according to sources from the PSOE. The party’s regional leader, José Vélez, visited the hospital to check on his condition.
The emergency was reported just before 9.10am, with multiple calls warning authorities of the vehicle travelling in the wrong direction from kilometre 170. The crash deeply shocked witnesses, with a Red Cross team being the first to assist. One social worker described the force of the collision and said they initially feared the drivers had not survived.
This incident is the second serious accident involving a wrong-way driver on the same stretch of motorway in recent months. In August, a similar crash resulted in the deaths of two motorcyclists near Corvera airport.
The Guardia Civil is investigating Tuesday’s accident.
