Tomorrow, Thursday at 7 pm, the Bookstore of Casa Árabe in Madrid presents the book Alandalus. Oriente en Occidente (Alandalus. East in the West), by Emilio González Ferrín, published by Shackleton Books. The presentation will be attended by the author and moderated by Susana Calvo, professor of Art History at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

An agile and documented journey through the history of Alandalus, one of the most exceptional (and unknown) periods in our history. Spain, which was once called Iberia, then Hispania and later Spania, was largely forged from the Mediterranean. Through that sea, the indisputable vehicle of the Greek civilization continuity of antiquity, emerged the extraordinary Alandalus, the stage in which developed one of the most sophisticated and advanced cultures of the time. However, its almost eight centuries of existence have traditionally been omitted from the chronicle of Spanish history. This book aims to fill that gap and invite us to discover one of the most exceptional periods in our history. The result is an interpretation of the history of Alandalus (and Spain) that moves away from scholastic tradition and mythical stories.

Emilio González Ferrín is a professor of Islamology and Arab Studies at the University of Seville. Doctor in 1995 with a thesis on the Euro-Arab dialogue, his teaching and research profile tries to overcome orientalism in the interpretation of the Arab-Islamic fact. In this sense, his work revolves around three points: starting from the cultures and religions compared, analyzing the cultural sources of the Koranic text (1) and the so-called medieval historiology, especially the entry of the Islamic into Europe through al-Andalus (2), to present a coherent approach to Euro-Arab (3) and Mediterranean relations in general. He has published numerous articles, a dozen papers on cultural cooperation with the Arab world and Islam and books. In June 2008 he received the Scientific Dissemination Award from the University of Seville for his articles in the Spanish press.
