The launch of the comedian’s boisterous chat show, La Revuelta (“The Revolt”), on the state broadcaster’s TVE 1 channel last month, has sparked a ratings war, questions in parliament and the latest clash in Spain’s culture wars.
Broncano’s programme has upended the decade-long domination of Spanish television by its rival, El Hormiguero (“The Anthill”) and its host, Pablo Motos. A country riven by polarised politics, Spain now has two massively popular chat shows: Broncano’s for left-wing viewers and Motos’s for those on the right.
